DRA and GRL

What is a DRA?

The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) is what we use at Valley in grades K-3 to measure each student's reading level. This assessment consists of the student reading aloud to the teacher checking accuracy and also a comprehension check is given after reading. Students are grouped according to levels for small group instruction called Guided Reading. As the year progresses, the students will move levels as needed.

When are DRA's given?

  • Grades 1-3 begin and end each year with the DRA.
  • Kindergarten gives the DRA at the beginning of 2nd semester and the end of the year.
  • Running records during reading groups determine how often through the year we move levels for each student.

What is a GRL?

The Guided Reading Level is the short assessment that we use in grades 4-6 to determine a student's reading level. This assessment consists of testing fluency, accuracy, and comprehension as well. We switch from the DRA to the GRL assessment for grades 4-6 because the GRL is more specific for these age levels whereas the DRA is pretty broad jumping levels in increments of 10.

When are GRL's given?

  • Grades 4-6 begin and end each year with the GRL assessment.
  • Running records during reading groups determine how often through the year we move levels for each student.

Below you will find charts showing which DRA and GRL levels are considered to be proficient at each grade level.
