Good Reader Strategies

These are strategies we remind our students to focus on as they come across words that are difficult for them to read.

  1. Does that make sense?
  2. Use the picture.
  3. Use the beginning sound.
  4. Is it a popcorn word?
  5. Look for words or chunks in the word.
  6. Cover up the ending.
  7. Look for words with silent “e”.
  8. Use the sounds we know.
  9. Skip the word and read on. Reread.
  10. Two vowels go walking; the first one does the talking.
  11. Try flipping the vowel sound if one doesn't make sense.
