Good Reader Strategies
These are strategies we remind our students to focus on as they come across words that are difficult for them to read.
- Does that make sense?
- Use the picture.
- Use the beginning sound.
- Is it a popcorn word?
- Look for words or chunks in the word.
- Cover up the ending.
- Look for words with silent “e”.
- Use the sounds we know.
- Skip the word and read on. Reread.
- Two vowels go walking; the first one does the talking.
- Try flipping the vowel sound if one doesn't make sense.
